Objectives
1- Study French existentialism through some of its most representative texts;
2- Become aware of and study the fictional work of Vergílio Ferreira in its internal evolution through the selected works, highlighting the importance that the existential questioning had for the issues raised within these;
3- Study some theoretical texts of Vergílio Ferreira not only on existentialism but also on the major issues which marked the thinking of his time in order to broaden the understanding of his novels;
4- Acquire the ability to write a research assignment based on one of the topics considered, using a specialised bibliography and working on some of the concepts studied throughout the seminar.

1.The neo-realist stage and the passage to existentialism: Vagão J e Mudança.
2.Aparição and the discovery of the metaphysical I. Estrela Polar and the search for the personal Other and the metaphysical Other: absent Presence as the final meaning in the search for Love and Truth.
3.Alegria Breve and the announcement of a new cultural Form resulting from humans who have rediscovered themselves in their new human identity thanks to their existential search.
4.Para Sempre: the culmination of the importance of the word and language, an issue present from the first novel, and the culmination of the lyrical existential questioning of life.
III Study of certain essays:

Presentations on different points of the programme. Discussion of works presented.
Tutorial guidance, with the focus on the writing of a research assignment
The evaluation of knowledge implies student presence at two-thirds of the sessions held and also involves the submission of a research assignment which should show knowledge of the topics covered as well as the capacity to deal in a critical manner with the concepts studied.
Evaluation method
Writing assignment: 80%.
Oral presentation and defence of the assignment:20%.
