Objectives

a) To acquire knowledge regarding the debates which are currently taking place in Francophone Post-Colonial Studies and learn how to differentiate the different paradigms involved and the concepts linked to them;
b) Acquire knowledge of some of the key texts within Francophone Postcolonial Theory as the main controversies underlying these;
c) Acquire the ability to produce a research paper based on one of the themes covered, using a specialised bibliography and dealing with concepts from within Postcolonial Theory.

Subject matter

This seminar is designed to familiarize students with contemporary Francophone Literature, focusing the themes of identity/identities and hybridity. The literary approach, starting from a transdisciplinary vision will be articulated in a comparative perspective, with some postcolonial theories - as a \"place of emergence of new cultures.\"
1.Postcolonial Theory:
1.1. Orientalism by Edward Saïd;
1.2. Homi K. Bhabha: the concepts of hibridity and mimicry.
2.Literary Texts:
2.1. Le ventre de l´Atlantique by Fatou Diome and the deconstruction of francocentrism.
2.2. Les yeux baissés by Tahar Ben Jelloun and the difficulty of being \"the other\".

Teaching method

Presentations on different aspects of the programme.
Discussion of papers presented.
Tutorial guidance, focused on preparing and carrying out a research paper.
Evaluation of knowledge implies being present for 2/3 of the sessions held as well as the submission of a research paper which should show knowledge of the issues covered as well as the ability to deal in a critical manner with the concepts covered in the course.

Evaluation method

Writing assignment: 80%.
Oral presentation and defence of the assignment:20%.
