Objectives
To enhance students knowledge in the area of Literary Translation by the consideration of the major issues at stake.
To develop the ability to carry out academic research in the area of Translation Studies and Literary Translation.
To develop a critical awareness of interpretation and textual analysis, and the wider issues involved in producing literary text translations.
To develop translational competence through the practice of translation, considering different literary genres and subgenres.
To acquire strategies for translation problems in different types of texts and contexts.
To be able to capture and render the style of the source text in the translation process.
To develop theoretical and critical thinking and evaluatory skills and insights into Literary Translation both as a process and as a final result.
To acquire important skills, such as carrying out academic written work and oral presentations, improving analytical thought, and better use of electronic resources.
Prerequisites
Fluency in Portuguese and English languages.
Subject matter
Literary & Non-literary Texts in a translation context: specificity of literature.
Theoretical consideration and practical analysis of the problems of literary translation, English/Portuguese.
Translation of texts of different literary genres and subgenres; reflection on the process and product of literary translation.
Source language cultural context and adaptation to target language cultural context (linguistic, stylistic, pragmatic and cultural issues).
Specific and recurrent problems raised by literary translation (issues related to metaphor, textual genres, intertextuality, register and dialect issues, cultural issues, prosodic and rhythmic issues, diversity of style, etc.).
Evaluating different translations of the same source text: comparative analysis of the translation procedures.
Literary Translation as mediation among cultures: translation and globalization, the ethics of translation.
Reception of literary translation: the translator´s statute and translation as rewriting.

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical classes, with complementary individual tutorials, using information and communication technologies, scientific databases and bibliographical resources for Translation Studies and Literary Translation research.
Evaluation method
Assessment will focus on two main areas: 1) assiduity, participation in classwork and contribution towards teambuilding, limited written assignments and practical tests (50%); and 2) presentation of a research paper organized as a hypothetical future thesis or report (50%).
