Objectives

This unit aims at complementing theories and practices of different written productions. There will be a critical evaluation of the different skills that allow the construction and the interpretation of a text as a written “object” and tools will be provided in order to validate and qualitatively evaluate texts. In the first case, we include the instruments that support the established “norm” and the techniques that signal deviations from the norm. In the second case, we will discuss the linguistic productions of speakers that set, in writing, overlaps inherent to speech.
By the end of this curricular unit the students are expected to: develop the critical capacity that will allow them to intervene in the different stages of written productions, aiming at optimizing the final outcome; be able to identify accurately deviant forms and constructions in written productions, and provide clear diagnosis; adequately know and use specific tools to solve identified problems.

Subject matter

1. Writing and spoken language: supports and representations;
2. The writing systems: arbitrariness / convention;
2.1. Orthographic rules: are norms motivated?;
2.2. the act of writing: cognitive and physiologic implications;
3. Reading and writing: interactions and dependency(ies);
4. Written productions: writing what, to whom;
4.1. patterns of adequacy of written productions: “normative” approaches; criteria and instruments of qualitative validation of different productions;
4.2. Critical areas in the validation of texts (argument structure, relations between sentences, agreement, a.o.).
5. Writing and rewriting: from production to the formulation of texts;
5.1. mechanisms and supports for revising written productions;
5.2. (formal) revision of typographic proofs.

Teaching method

The seminars will have both a theoretical (50%) and a practical component (50%). In addition to oral presentations of guided readings, the other contents from the syllabus will be addressed following case studies. These cases studies will be chosen after data collection of relevant material to the description and reflexion on the topics of the programme. With these materials a portfolio will be built.

Evaluation method

The elaboration of the portfolio will be part of the student’s evaluation (40% of the final grade). The other 60% will be divided as follows: definition and resolution of a case study, 20%; elaboration of summaries of two readings, 20%; autonomous work, 10%; active participation in seminars, 10%.
