Objectives
1. Recognition and characterization of the main available standardization tools for Portuguese.
2. Acquisition of competences to the selection of the most adequate instruments to carry out different kinds of tasks in Linguistic Revision and Consultancy (elaboration of reviews, correcting proposals, ranking of choices, etc.)
3. Development of consulting practices and use of those instruments in the most suitable way to the specific tasks of Linguistic Revision and Consultancy.
4. Acquisition of the ability to define strategies for solving problems sustained by a critical review of the adequate instruments.

Subject matter
1. Instruments for language standardization
Definition and characterization of reference work (grammars and dictionaries) and of far-reaching work (vocabularies, manuals of orthography, guides and manuals). Criteria for selecting instruments in accordance with the needs of the users.
2. Normative descriptive grammars of Portuguese
Foundations and criteria for defining grammatical norm and correction. The (in)adequacy of the grammars as to the fulfillment of the users needs. Areas of variation / contradiction between different grammars and / or other instruments and tools. Strategies for solving problems.
3. Dictionaries of Portuguese
Definition and criteria of the main reference works. Relevance of dictionaries for regulating lexical usage. Setting versus adaptability (preferential hierarchy) of lexical choices.
4. Other instruments
Complementary uses of regulation tools and of other (new) resources and tools strategies and usage practices.

Teaching method
The curricular units will work as seminars and they will include the scheduled participation of students. This participation should include: oral presentations on course topics; critical essays; presentation of results from previously accomplished tasks (e. g. linguistic revision of different text types, elaboration of linguistic reviews), critical assessment of reference bibliography, identification of challenging tasks and problem-solving proposals.
Evaluation method
The evaluation will result from: students participation in the activities of the seminar (40%); 1 essay, supervised by the teacher, its oral presentation and discussion (60%). Reformulation of the final essay is foreseen.
