Objectives

To acquire and deepen explicit knowledge on Portuguese.
To be acquainted with the basic concepts of linguistic analysis.
To identify Portuguese distinctive features (phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic).
To be acquainted with the methodologies appropriate to linguistic description.
To characterize Portuguese main varieties, within distinct geographical, social and political contexts.
To identify shared and distinctive features of those varieties and to connect them to historical, geographical and social conditioning factors.

Sentence structure and syntactic functions
Coordination and subordination processes
Nominal expressions and reference
Verb forms and constructions – tense / aspect / mood marking; verbal and non-verbal markers
5. Contemporary Portuguese – unity and variation
European Portuguese dialects (general description)
Some contrasting features of the European and Brazilian varieties
African varieties – some characteristic features

Teaching method

The CU is weekly organized. Each teaching component includes: video-classes (topics and examples description, etc.); other resources and tools (videos, schemas, syntheses, etc.); bibliography.
All the available resources and tools as well as the contact with the teachers will have the Moodle platform as interface.

Evaluation method

(Short) exercises: 1 for each teaching unit.
Final exam.
