Objectives

1) To acquire professional competence in computer software used in translation, such as spell checking, thesauri and track changes.
2) To be aware of the possibilities and limitations of machine translation.
3)To acquire competence in research techniques for language and cultural resources on the Internet – WWW e Google.
4) To learn the fundamental concepts in Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) Tools (SDL Trados e MemoQ), such as Translation Memories, Termbases, Autosuggest Dictionaries and Alignment, concept of segmentation, source, target and bilingual files.
5) To acquire competence in applying these concepts in programs such as Trados and MemoQ.
6)To learn how to use corpora in translation and the use of collocation in CAT Tools.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of information and communication technologies.

Subject matter

1. Use of Software Suites such as Microsoft Office for tools for translation and revision
2. Search facilities in Google and WaC - Web as Corpus
3. Making and use of translation memories, databases and Autosuggest Dictionaries
4. Basic concepts of Computer Assisted Translation Tools (SDL Trados and MemoQ), of segmentation, source, target and bilingual files
5. Basic interoperability of data
6. Use of machine translation

Teaching method

The classes take place in a computer room. They include short demonstrations by the teacher to show software functions, or demonstrations where students also carry out the steps being shown. At other times students will practice the sofware with the help of the teacher. Question and answer sessions will then clear up any doubts regarding the software function(s) being considered. Academic articles will be supplied and students will also consult websites.

Evaluation method

Assessment will focus on two main areas: 1) an oral exam at the computer to evaluate the software competence acquired by the students during the course (70%); and 2) the production of a written assignment analysing existing glossary material, in a previously allocated area (30%).
