Objectives

a) To provide a thorough understanding of the main problems posed to national artistic production in the first decades of the 20th century.
b) To work on concepts that historiographically define \"modern\", \"modernity\" and \"modernism\" in Portuguese art.
c) To analyse the relations between modern art and political power during the 1930’s and 1940’s, setting out the role of painting, sculpture and architecture on the consolidation of Salazar’s “Estado Novo” image.
d) To locate and discuss, in the scope of that action, the contributes´ implications of the so-called \"second generation of modernist\" artists.
e) To verify the importance of Surrealism and Neorealismo´s proposals in the context of Portuguese art during those years.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

1) From “Humorism” to “Modernism”.
2) Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Almada Negreiros and Futurism.
3) The dilution of Futurism. The dispute of “Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes” in 1921. Art and the State. The role of Magazines in the introduction of a new taste. Cafe “Brasileira do Chiado” and its paintings.
4) “Independents” Exhibition in 1930 and the role of architecture in that presentation.
5) “Política do Espírito” and “Bom Gosto”. The action of António Ferro through SPN/SNI: salons and awards. Modernism and Nationalism. Modern art and folk art.
6) Architecture in1930’s and 1940’s. The “new” city of Lisbon and the role of architects in its construction. The competitions for the monument in Sagres. The architectonical definition of “The Portuguese World Exhibition” . The exhibition “15 Years of Public Building” and the I National Congress of Architecture in 1948.
7) Architecture versus Painting in 1948. Diogo de Macedo and the Portuguese Museum of Contemporary Art. Surrealism and Neorealism.

Teaching method

Theoretical-practical weekly classes. Teaching is complemented by the analysis of artworks presented in classes and by weekly discussions of selected texts from the bibliography.

Evaluation method

Presentation and discussion of texts during classes.
Presentation of 1 final research work (15 pages).
