Objectives

This seminar addresses the theoretical and methodological framework of Specialised Translation, as
understood in the broad sense of translation carried out in a specific area of application (health and life
sciences, law and social sciences, scientific translation, technical translation, among others) or with recourse
to a specific means (audiovisual translation, localization).
Specific Aims:
º develop advanced scientific knowledge in the theory and methodology of specialised translation;
º extend knowledge of translation processes and the issues of translation in the various domains;
º develop research skills and analysis in specialised translation.

General Translation versus Specialised Translation: demarcation issues
- Theories and methodologies applied to specialised translation (Functionalism)
- Application areas:
• Fields: scientific translation, medical translation, legal translation, technical translation, economic and
financial translation,...
• Different means: translation for multimedia (image + text + sound), audiovisual translation (subtitling,
dubbing, \"voice over\"), localization (software, video games, websites, accessibility)
• Resources: machine translation, computer-assisted translation (translation memories).
- Characterization of the translation-process: staging, documentation, translation tools, ...
- Problems of Translation: terminology, ´vertical complexity´, register, cultural adequacy, ...
- Research methodologies in specialised translation

Teaching method

The classes will have theoretical and practical components, with both lectures and practical sessions, where
individual and group analysis of case studies and results will take place. The seminars are to be organized in
modules and specialists from businesses, organizations and academia will be invited to participate in some
areas of application.

Evaluation method

Assessment includes the compilation of a portfolio in one of the application areas of this
subject or on one of the themes of the program plus an oral presentation on the same.
