Objectives

a) To define a general perspective on the mechanisms and reasons that configured art as a scientific research subject.
b) To demonstrate how a certain approach to the artistic object can contribute not only to its apprehension, but also to enrich the perspective of the ones dedicated to creation.
c) To acknowledge the necessary research tools and identify the transformations that have marked the research process itself.
d) To call attention to the scientific fields that must be attended on the studies to develop and underline the increasing importance that some of them assume.

Subject matter

1. Research problems in the art´s field.
2. The process of identification and constitution of the object of study.
3. Art practices and Human Sciences.
4. The research paradoxes and the importance of case-studies.
5. Critical exploration of research examples.

Teaching method

The sessions have an explanation component, resulting from the interventions of the teacher and specialists on the subjects under analysis, followed by a discussion of the questions on focus or that derive from researches already started by the candidates for a PHD degree. The sessions will always be supported by the presentation of works of art that illustrate and document the contents of the Seminar. The students will be encouraged to present critical surveys of the most relevant texts included on the bibliography or that emerge from the group debates.

Evaluation method

Participation on the seminar and submission of critical surveys: 50%
Submission of an essay (15 pages) focused on one of the problematics under discussion in the seminars: 50%.
