Objectives
This seminar aims (1) to provide initial training in Audiovisual Translation (AVT), and in particular in subtitling
in Portugal; (2) within the framework of the most recent developments in Translation Studies, to encourage the consideration of translation problems and of translational procedures specific to AVT in general and subtitling in particular.
Prerequisites
Subject matter
(1) Translation and AVT in Portugal: some figures; (2) Basic concepts to reflect upon Translation: Translational Norm, Translation Unit, Shift, Universal of Translation, Translation Strategies and Procedures; (3) Modalities of AVT; The polysemiotic Source Text; (4) Subtitling: The Code of Good Subtitling Practice; Subtitling Norms in Portugal; (5) Functions of Subtitling Software; (6) Problems and Procedures of Translation for Subtitling: exercises; (7) Subtitling exercises: children animation programmes; (8) Subtitling exercises: musical.

Teaching method
Students will be frequently required to make oral and written presentations on the different items in the
syllabus and on the selected bibliography. Subtitling exercises correspond to direct contact with the subtitling
software (SPOT) and hands-on experience of selected real-life AVT translation tasks.
Evaluation method
The final mark will correspond to the average of the following items: attendance, punctuality, regular oral
participation and all assignments carried out throughout the semester (60%), final project (40%).
