Objectives
The aim of this Curriculum Model is to raise awareness of the risks and vulnerabilities that present-day society faces, due to the occurrence of extreme natural phenomena and the catastrophic events resulting from technological developments. It is important to reflect on the factors that make societies more, or less, vulnerable to these phenomena, and which measures should be taken to reduce the consequences of these. Diagnosis, monitoring and prevention are key elements to minimizing the ensuing effects on different scales. Due to these climate changes society should develop mechanisms to safeguard people and property.
Prerequisites
Subject matter
The aims of this Curriculum Module are: (i) recognize the importance of interdisciplinary analysis of the level of risk and vulnerability in the occurrence of natural and technological disasters, (ii) understand the different scales and magnitudes at which these phenomena occur, (iii) evaluate the effects of the occurrence of these phenomena at the environmental, social and economic level; (iv) analyse the type and frequency of these natural and technological disasters in Portugal.
The competencies to be acquired include methodological knowledge of diagnostic techniques and instruments for monitoring and preventing such phenomena.
