Objectives

At the end of this unit, the student is, in the context of Ethnomusicology, able to:
a) Discuss theoretic and methodological concepts to analyze music processes and products;
b) Mention theoretical aspects and authors, related with precise music research fields;
c) Critically distinguish methodological strategies and research tools in theoretical background;
d) Develop scientific thinking and writing acknowledging research ethical impacts.

Approval in Ethnomusicology – Introduction Course

Subject matter

The unit Ethnomusicology: Theory and Methods develops in four blocs articulating words, ideas and belonging systems with training for fieldwork and ethnography:
a) ETHNOMUSICOLOGIC THEORY, TEMATICS & PROBLEMATIZING TOPICS: 1. Concepts, behaviors and sound products; 2. Time, place and metaphor; 3. Contexts; 4. Strategies.
b) MUSIC & NATIONALISM, RESEARCH QUESTIONS & HYPOTHESIS: 1. Individual and collective identity; 2. National conscience, colonialism; 3. Questions; 4. Hypothesis.
c) MUSIC & CONFLICT/PROTEST, FILEDWORK & DATA ANALYSIS: 1. Emotion and action; 2. Emotion and resilience; 3. Observation and notes; 4. Interviews and questionnaires.
d) MUSIC, MIGRATION & GLOBALIZATION, ETHNOGRAFIC WRITING: 1. Revelation of borders and citizenship; 2. Challenge of categories; 3. Research proposal, structure and style; 4. Proposal development.

Teaching method

Assessment is multiple and the score weights are negotiated in the first week according to the following: oral presentations of a theoretical and a related methodological aspect (TA & MA 10% + 10%); research proposal design, two versions (25% + 25%); required individual written document (10%); class participation, research presentation (20%).

Evaluation method

A avaliação contempla parâmetros diversos e a pontuação é negociada na primeira semana de aulas de acordo com o seguinte: apresentações orais de aspectos teóricos e metodológicos relacionados (AT e AM 10% + 10%); desenho da proposta de investigação, duas versões (25% + 25%); documento escrito individual requerido (10%); participação e apresentação da proposta (20%).
