Objectives

a) Know the most recent major historiographical interpretations relating to the themes studied
b) Know the major historical documents, demonstrating the ability to analyze and interpret and integrate them in their
historical context.
c) Knowing the political, social, economic, religious and cultural life of ancient Egypt.
d) Develop skills oral and written, demonstrating key concepts and recognize terminoloia appropriate.
e) Acquire knowledge and skills that enable a deeper study of ancient Oriental.

Subject matter

1. Feel the space – listen the men.
2. The rhythms of History: Concept of History and Periodization.
3. The Pharaonic State: Pharaoh – divine origin of royalty and its cosmic integration: transmission of royalty and the royal
jubilee. The exercise of power: the central and provincial administration. Legislative function; Social structure and
modalities of quotidian. The family.
4. The Religious Universe
Cosmogonies; The Divine: from the Demiurge to plurality; Return to unity: Akhenaten’s proposal. The cult: the everyday
cult and the solemn liturgies; Man and the divine: concept of man and way of life – the “order of Maat”. “Piety” or “personal
religion”. Magic; “Overcoming death”: beliefs, rituals and funerary texts. Representations of hereafter. Funerary cult.
5. Expressions of intellectual and artistic life.
Language and writing; Literature; Music and dance; The Arts: Architecture. Sculpture and Reliefs. Painting. Decorative Arts;
Sciences –medicine, mathematics and astronomy.
