Objectives
a) Identifying key cultural processes developed in the contemporary era.
b) Learning the major historiographical interpretations of themes studied.
c) Acknowledging basic bibliography and being able to work with historical documents of the time.
d) Developing oral and written communication skills, integrating a vocabulary and the specific categories relating to the contemporary era.
e) Acquire knowledge and skills that enable a deeper study of the subjects addressed

Subject matter
Part one: General problems of contemporary culture
1. State of the art: from the idea of culture to the new objects of Cultural history.
2. Popular culture, nationalization of culture and invention of tradition.
3. Globalization, capitalism and massification of culture.
4. The criticism of culture and social distinction.
5. Cultural studies and the issue of emancipation.
Second part: research laboratory in Cultural history
1. Nationalism and the invention of Portuguese culture from Almeida Garret to Joana Vasconcelos.
2. A transnational history of sport from Moscow 1945 to Rio de Janeiro 2014.
3. The idea of \"lack of culture\" from the investment in literacy policies to the crisis of scientific policies.
4. Culture as a technology of power: agriculture, war and culture from the Portuguese Empire to the April Revolution.
5. Architecture, spectacle and emancipation: Eduardo Souto Moura, Jacques Rancière and Jimmy Jump.

Lectures: presentation of the various topics of the program. Theoretical-practical lessons: students will reflect and discuss on selected texts and audiovisual material

3. essay writing based on bibliography and documentary information (70%)
