Objectives
a) To understand the fortresses evolution in the Portuguese territory from prehistory until contemporary times articulated with the warfare evolution.
b) To acquire specific knowledge about military disposes and warfare sites in Middle Ages and Early Modern Period both in the Portuguese kingdom and overseas territories.
c) To be able to identify archaeological structures and material culture from military contexts.

- Urban military structures, husun, ribats and watch-towers from Islamic period
- From the Reconquest to the romanic style castles and the religious military orders influence
- Medieval armament and battlefields
- Gothic castles and urban walls
- Transition style: from tension to powder artillery
- Renaissance art of war
- Portuguese Restoration war fortresses and military engineering
- Napoleon´s military campaigns and defensive lines

Teaching method
Theoretical classes with audiovisual support.
Practical classes supported by cartographical maps, iconography and archaeological materials, as well as texts and drawings resulting from archaeological investigation.
Visits to museums, fortifications and military archaeological sites.
Evaluation method
Two evaluation elements: one individual written test (40% of the final mark); one individual or group final paper, three students maximum (60% of the final mark)
