Objectives
To provide and encourage:
The knowledge of the history of Europe, the thought about European unity and the of the process of European unification
and construction;
The study of European networks: understanding its identity and its importance as historical heritage;
The knowledge of the history of the Portuguese thought about European cooperation and the historical process of
integration and participation of Portugal in the movements and organizations of European cooperation;
The knowledge of the key documents and literature on the topic and;
The ability to analyse and interpret, understanding them in its historical and cultural context.
It is intended to promote and develop the ability;
To reflect and support critical thinking on the idea of Europe and the European Community;
To think of Portugal in the European framework.
Acquisition of competences in written and oral expositions, integrating vocabulary and an appropriate terminology and
discourse

Subject matter
The first part of the program studies how the name and idea of Europe appeared, with which assumptions and proposals of
cooperation and unification emerged among European countries over the time, understanding the plans and projects that
generally appeared until the First World War, analysing the issue of European unification and the projects arising in the
period up to World War II and studying in detail the proposals, projects, movements, institutions that were to mark the
history of European integration until the Lisbon Treaty.
The second part is devoted to the study of the Portuguese thought and of Portugals participation in projects and
cooperation movements, and the European integration in the second half of the Twentieth century

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical classes, based on masterly exposures and the discussion of topics by students based on the
analysis of documents, maps, charts and the use of audio-visual media.
Planning and scheduling of activities is defined, presented and distributed at the beginning of the academic cycle.
Presentation of the subjects, accompanied by the identification,in the classroom and via moodle,documents,sources and
bibliography,and other resources,including web,it assumes and appeals,beyond the expository and explanatory
dimension,scenarios of interpretation,content questioning and discussion.
Evaluation method
Evaluation includes a frequency test,with access to books and support materials,and a written assignment.
Written assignment consists of a literature review or an exercise of reflection and synthesis of a topic.The topic is decided
with the Professor,prior to the presentation and discussion of a work plan with the Professor in class.The final text will be
presented and defended orally
