Objectives
the knowledge of the main characteristics, conjunctures, pathways, noting the main international tendencies and several
national cases of the economy and society in contemporary context since the emergence of the Industrial Revolution;
knowledge of the main aspects that comprise the social and economic thought;
understand the dynamics and dimensions of internationalization/globalization that characterize the contemporary world
knowledge of the basic bibliography and major historiographical trends on the topic and
the ability to analyse and interpret them, understanding them in their historical and cultural context
It is intended to promote and develop the ability:
to reflect and support critical thinking on the issue of economic and social development, considering the historical context
that marks contemporaneity.
Acquisition of competence in terms of oral and written exposure, integrating vocabulary and an appropriate conceptual
discourse.

Subject matter
They are studied in this course the main characteristics,dynamics and conjunctures that marked the World economy
and,especially the European,in the contemporary era.
The program begins with the study of the economic and social formation since the Industrial Revolution, including the
analysis of the demographic behaviour, changes at the manufacturing level, the communications, the impacts and
developments of science and technology and the profound social transformations. Several national experiences are
analysed with emphasis on the British case. The study proceeds through the characterization of the World economy,
including the processes of internationalization/globalization in the context of the Belle Époque and the liberal order that
characterized it, making from there, the study of the succession of wars and economic crises, noting the process of
economic development and the social mutations that marked the twentieth century, since the First World War until the end
of the Cold War

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical classes, based on masterly exposures and the discussion of topics by students based on the
analysis of documents, maps, charts and the use of audio-visual media.
The planning and scheduling of activities is defined, presented and distributed at the beginning of the academic cycle.
The presentation of the subjects, accompanied by the identification, in the classroom and via moodle, documents, sources
and bibliography, and other resources, including web, it assumes and appeals, beyond the expository and explanatory
dimension, scenarios of interpretation, content questioning and discussion.
Evaluation method
The evaluation includes a frequency test, with access to books and support materials, and a written assignment.
The written assignment might consist of a literature review or an exercise of reflection and synthesis of a topic. The topic is
decided with the Professor, prior to the presentation and discussion of a work plan with the Professor and in class.
