Objectives


Class B:
a) To master and refine the knowledge about Theory of Literature up to one of its key turning points towards modernity
b) To contextualize the authors addressed and discuss the limits of literary tradition
c) To critically read philosophical texts fundamental to the evolution of literary theory and criticism
d) To manage and organize a bibliography relevant to the theme/research to be prepared individually

1. Art as an imitation of Nature
a) Mimesis and realism in Plato.
b) The exaltation of Mimesis in Aristotle. Model as essence.
c) From Archetype to entelechy.
2. Art and Nature – paradigm shifts
a) Configuration of the Renaissance paradigm. \"On the Sublime\" by Pseudo-Longinus.
b) Cosmovision and epistemological changes – from Magic to scientific outlook.
c) Recovery of the classical precepts (Boileau, Pope and Count of Ericeira).
3. The metamorphosis of aesthetic consciousness
a) Fragmentation of the Beautiful and plurality of Mimesis (Addison and Young).
b) \"An Inquiry ...\" by E. Burke: from genre to aesthetic behaviour.
c) New concepts: Taste, Beautiful, Sublime, Creativity, Genius, Inspiration.
4. Configuration of the romantic paradigm
a) Kant and \"The Critique of Judgment\". From Taste to the notion of Aesthetic Judgment. Genius and Art.
b) Portugal and the maintenance of the Renaissance paradigm (C.J. de Oliveira) Misinterpretations. Alexandre Herculano as Kant´s reader.

Teaching method


Class B:
Lecturing with multimedia support (60%); class discussions and analysis of oral and written texts, presentation and discussion of student papers (40%).

Evaluation method


Class B:
Evaluation method: a critical review/commentary of one of the books from the secondary bibliography (20%); a short essay / Monograph oriented by the teacher on a topic to be proposed (9,000 characters / 6 pages - 60%) ; oral presentation of the monograph together with interventions in class (20%). End of semester exam: the test (50%) and the scheduled exercises (50%) will contribute equally to the final grade.
