Objectives
a) To identify the diachronic evolution of the Latin literature.
b) To recognize the main role of some authors in the Latin literature.
c) To analyse some significant texts of these authors.
d) To identify the classical legacy in the European literatures, mainly the Portuguese.
e) To communicate, orally and in writing, clearly, properly and with coherent and critical arguments, acquired knowledge.

Subject matter
1. Overview and periodization of the Latin literature.
2. The origins and the first authors. Plautus.
3. The hellenization. The grex Scipionis. Lucilius.
4. The eloquence. Cicero.
5. The lyric poetry. The poetae noui. Catullus.
6. The historiography. Sallust and Livy.
7. The epic, elegiac and didactic poetry. Vergil, Ovid and Horace.
8. The imperial age. Seneca, Martial, Tacite, Apuleius.

Teaching method
Lectures and individual work of students, presented orally, related with the topics of the programme.
Evaluation method
The final evaluation consists of the arithmetic mean between the marks of the written essay and the final test, counting each 50%.
