Objectives

a) Explanation of the concept of Age of Enlightenment (Aufklärung) and Enlightened Absolutism.
b) The role of German culture in the European cultural, political and scientific movement. Rationalism and Empiricism.
c) To evaluate the philosophical features of the age of Enlightenment and the important role of european geographic, botanical, literary and musical voyages.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of German

Subject matter

a) From the Lutheran reformation to the pietismus of Philipp Jakob Spener and August Hermann Francke;
b) The works of Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing: harmonization of art and ethics;
c) From Christian Wolffs systematic rationalism to Kants idealism;
d) From barroque music to classical music: The contribution of German speaking composers;
e) Women´s contribution to the Enlightenment: Salons and debating societies. Women in print;
f) Educational reforms and new pedagogical trends: progressive schools (the Philanthropinum)
g) Children´s literature as enlightened pedagogy: the uprise of a new genre;
h) Echoes of the French Revolution in the German states. The contrast between Germany and France.

Teaching method

The teaching method is mainly reflexive and oriented to the contents of the CU. Students will present and discuss key texts and documents of the workshop.

Evaluation method

A mid-term test (25%) and a final test (25%).
Participation in class is mandatory and includes an oral presentation.(50%)

Courses
