Objectives

a) To understand the structural and phenomenological problems. Evaluation of myths which underlie 18th-century German literature;
b) To read critically key texts of poetry and fiction;
c) To learn how to contextualize the authors and to review the limits of literary history;
d) In-depth analysis of selected authors and texts;
e) To organize bibliographic research as a preparation for critical reading of a literary work.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of German.

Subject matter

a) The social position of the author in the early eighteenth century;
b) The influence of political, economic and social factors on literature;
c) The lack of a national style and the gradual evolution of pride in German language and literature;
d) German literary language as a sign of national identity: individualism, originality, concern with the self and its limits, openness;
e) The diferent periods of 18th century German literature: Early Enlightenment, Rokoko, Literature of Sensibility and Storm and Stress, Late Enlightenment, Weimar Classicism, Early Romanticism.
f) Literary revival: women´s and children´s literature.

Teaching method

The teaching method is mainly reflexive and oriented to the contents of the CU. Students will present and discuss key texts and documents of the workshop.

Evaluation method

A mid-term test (25%) and a final test (25%). Participation in class is mandatory and includes an oral presentation.(50%)
