Objectives
a) To acquire the competences required to translate from Portuguese into French.
b) To acquire an understanding of the various dimensions of texts (text types, comunication situation, etc.).
c) To be able to reflect upon and improve strategies for solving terminological and notional-cultural difficulties when translating Portuguese texts into French.
d) To develop the ability to use autonomously acquired knowledge of the French and Portuguese languages to solve translation dificulties.
e) To develop the competences of reflection and self evaluation with regard to personal work.
f) To improve writing competence in French.
g) To gain knowledge of the different domains of the Social Sciences and Humanities in Portugal.
h) To understand French writing on Social Sciences and Humanities as a cultural practice.
Prerequisites
French language (level A2.2)
Subject matter
1. Translation from Portuguese to French of a range of different types of texts (narrative, informative, argumentative) extracted from reports, news articles, scientific papers, abstracts (Sociology, Philosophy, History, Anthropology, Media Studies, Literary Criticism, Education, Linguistics).
2. Contrastive grammar and stylistics activities.
3. Error analysis.
4. Strategies for the solving of translation problems (corpora, databases, dictionaries, glossaries, parallel texts in the target language).
5. Acquisition of specific terminology and phraseology.

Teaching method
1. Preparatory work outside the classroom: diagnosis of difficulties and a draft translation into French, with comments on translation choices, of texts written in Portuguese.
2. Comments on the Portuguese text, presentation and class discussion of the difficulties encountered and of the different translations produced by the students.
3. Correction of errors, vocabulary explanation, means and tools to clarify doubts. Construction of a small lexicon and syntactic notes (phraseology, connectors) as a result of each student´s reflections.
Evaluation method
1. Continuous evaluation (30%): production of a portfolio consisting of three texts (300 words each) from those that were translated in class, along with the corrections made in class and notes on syntax (3) and lexis (3) and a bibliography.
2. Production of an individual work (20%): 1 text of the student´s choice (1000 words), together with 3 syntactic and 3 lexical notes.
3. 2 tests done in class: 50%.
