Objectives
a) Introduction to textual typologies specific to technical and scientific language.
b) To gain awareness of the problems of translation, both primary and secondary, which are more frequent when translating from Portuguese into Spanish.
c) To become acquainted with specific research methods and tools for translation.
d) To develop the capacity for autonomous learning, critical analysis and evaluation of translations and translating.
e) To develop suitable translation working habits and methods.
f) To become familar with the professional dimension of translation.
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
1. Elementary science and technology concepts in Spanish contexts.
2. Comparative study and analysis of Portuguese and Spanish technical and scientific texts in different areas.
3. Research methods and useful resources for technical and scientific translation.
4. Specific problems of translating from Portuguese into Spanish. Comparative analysis of both languages at all grammatical levels. Translation strategies for this specific pair of languages and how to make coherent decisions to solve problems.
5. Analysis of research methods and specific resources for technical-scientific translation and information gathering.
6. Practice in the following tasks: translation, glossary creation and translation assessment.

Teaching method
Theoretical classes (30%); Practical classes (70%).
Analysis of translations, translation of texts, correction of translations, practical analysis of problems and difficult items. Text comparison. Use of suitable tools.
Evaluation method
1. Regular translation work in the classroom, following prior preparation (30%).
2. Two translation tests (15 % each).
3. A final written exam (40%).
75% course attendance is mandatory.
Minimum Spanish language level of A2.2 is highly recommended.
