Objectives
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
a) understand the relativity of the notions of language and dialect;
b) identify and describe linguistic differences between different stages of peninsular languages;
c) identify and describe linguistic differences between peninsular languages and dialects;
d) relate diachronic, geographic and social variation in the peninsular context;
e) apply descriptive tools in the analysis of peninsular linguistic varieties;
f) characterize the (socio)linguistic situations of the different peninsular regions;
g) characterize the situation of Spanish and Portuguese worldwide.

Teaching method
The course includes theoretical classes (supported by power point presentations) and practical classes. In the practical classes, students will be asked to analyse data from linguistic varieties and draw conclusions. Considering ´corpora´ from different iberian dialect varieties (some of them including spoken registers), students will be asked to make empirical observations regarding language variation. They will also be asked to make exercises comparing languages and identifying differences in the changes from latin to the iberian languages.
