Objectives
1. Identifying different approaches, authors, publications and main contexts throughout the history of Ethnomusicology.
2. Acquiring knowledge about scientific innovations throughout the History of Ethnomusicology.
3. Acquiring the main conceptual tools for a critical perspective on the literature selected.
4. Developing the capacity to relate political, social and musical data for scientific purposes.
5. Developing the capacity to apply the knowledge in the writing of an annotated chronology.

Subject matter
A. Global vision on different approaches of Ethnomusicology through time.
a) Comparative Musicology
b) Developments in the USA: music areas, acculturation and functionalism;
c) Developments in Europe: nationalism and research traditions;
d) John Blacking and the broadening of the scope of Ethnomusicology;
e) Music and language, urban musical practices, migration, popular music and music industries.
B. Perspectives, publications and authors with relevant production.
C. Critical ethnomusicological approaches within the identified domains.
D. Political and social aspects related with turning points in the history of the discipline.
E. Annotated thematic chronology.

Teaching method
This course will be taught as a seminar. A theoretical part (50%) includes oral presentations and discussions of case studies, critical approaches to relevant literature and the applicability of the learned perspectives to specific cases. The second part, practical (50%), follows accompanying the conception and written development of annotated thematic chronologies, in 3 versions.
Evaluation method
Evaluation, to negotiate at the beginning, develops in turn of the written work: 1 text about a meaningful idea of historical meaning (3000 cws) (15%); 1 text about a reference point, promoter of an historical trend of research (5000 cws) (15%); 3 versions of an annotated thematic chronology (15%+20%+20%); participation and oral presentation (15%).
