Objectives
a) Prepare future archivists and librarians with basic knowledge that enables them to identify the need for preservation and conservation in situations of routine or emergency in order to work directly with technical specialty;
b) Increase awareness of archivists and librarians with enough information so they can identify problems of preservation and conservation and relate it with direct and / or indirect causes;
c) To develop skills to enable interdisciplinary master´s programs and contribute to the creation of global and strategic framework of preventive conservation and risk management;
d) Increase the responsiveness of real situations in the environment of archive or library, using sustainable solutions and enhancing available resources;
e) Provide the optimization of research methods in preservation and conservation, particularly in terms of selection of bibliographical sources or information online.

Subject matter
1.PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION IN ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES
- Terminology, Ideas / Ideals, Concepts and Ethics.
- Environment Library, Archives and Museum: convergent and complementary functions and its relation with heritage conservation.
- Context and evolution of preservation and conservation in Portugal.
- Collections, funds and collections - development and maintenance.
- The preventive conservation as a strategic option. Plan and implement a program of Preservation and Conservation compatible with the policies of access.
2. SAFEGUARD OF INFORMATION AND SUPPORTS IN LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES
- Media, materials, shapes and types.
- Traditional structures and new digital media.
- The book as a document and as an object; intellectual content, material and immaterial documents.
- Direct and indirect causes of degradation; solutions direct and indirect preservation.
- Observation and recognition of damage and interpreting its meaning.
- Awareness and behavior management in favor of preservation and conservation.
3. RISK MANAGEMENT
- Extreme risks and risks of routine.
- Evaluation and interpretation of risk, creating tools for data collection.
- Policies for their preservation and horizontal application, the role of the various units.
Emergency plan: development and implementation.
4. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CIRCUIT FOR DOCUMENTATION
The deposit to the reading room, deposit technical services; transfer and playback support, conservation and restoration, national and international exhibitions.

Teaching method
-Lectures accompanied by the presentation of PowerPoint slides and exe.learning, continuously linking contents to case studies.
-Monthly thematic research, monitored in the classroom (Internet) and its critical use.
-Provided three thematic seminars with guest speakers. Sessions will be promoted discussion and debate using SSM (Soft System Methodology) for integration of interventions.
Evaluation method
1 - Continuous assessment focusing on the relevance of the shares.
2 - Exploitation of research themes and methods of analysis demonstrated by exposure of suggested references.
3 - presentation in the classroom of a topic in preservation and conservation of library or archive, individually or in groups (maximum 3 items); 3.1-possibility to combine this evaluation with other (s) disciplines.
4 - Three test scouting in random date.
5 - Final examination for lack of evaluation elements or by choice justified.
Note: Master´s students are informed of the parameters evaluated at the beginning of the semester.
