Objectives

a) To thoroughly study the historical process from the rising of the first complex social formations and of early state societies to the beginning of the Roman colonization in Portugal;
b) To provide specific information concerning the economical, social, technological, ideological and cognitive evolution of proto historical societies in different regions;
c) Recognize the importance of commercial and cultural interactions from those time periods and the role of Atlantic, Continental and Mediterranean contributions, as well as discuss the great problems about proto historical times;
d) To inform about the characteristics and specifics of archaeological structures and remains, but also of the behaviours that such remains reveal;
e) Allow future archaeologists to acquire technical and theoretical knowledge with the objective of providing good professional services but also to be able to develop new interpretation models of the proto historical past.

Subject matter

The seminar will focus in the following subjects trying to cross chronologically and culturally the contents of the subject:
- Bronze weapons, gold ornaments and elites;
- The Castro’s Culture;
- Life and death in the Iron Age;
- Religions, sanctuaries and gods;
- Pre -colonial relations, Phoenician and Punics settlements.

Theoretical classes – helped by audiovisual information.
Practical classes: Remarks on documents, field trips, handling archaeological remains.
Presentation and discussion of a group course work




Evaluation method

- Written test (50%)
- Written individual or group coursework (maximum 10 pp) (50%)
The students with a plus than 10 points average will be approved.
