Objectives
Objectives
a)Based on the analysis of a case study for the Portuguese reality, analyze the relationship between Church and Monarchy in the Middle Ages
b)Recognize the problematic regarding the relations between spiritual and temporal powers in the Middle Ages
c)Characterize the respective roles of Church and Monarchy in a wider context.
d)Produce an individual or group essay, according to the group dynamic, but which will be the result of research on primary sources
Skills to develop:
a.Produce an essay with academic quality, type case study
b.Autonomous work, individually and within a group.
c.Dominion of the techniques of documentary and bibliographical research, in the traditional form and using the modern online research tools
d.Development of skills of critical analysis and synthesis, critical analysis of primary documents and relating them to wider contexts and problematics.
e.Development of critical judgment on documentary evidence and previous scholarship on the subject.

1. Bibliographical Search and presentation of results
2. Documentary search and compilation
3. Sistemation od the documentary evidence and of the questions it raises. Elaboration of the quesionnaire
4. Treatment of the data. Presentation of results and debate on the way forward.
5. Debate on partial results and definition of the plan for the colective work

Teaching method
The Seminar will be taught as a Research Seminar, with debate and joint sessions planned ahead with specific objectives, bearing in mind the progression and assessment of the work. If necessary, there will be individual tutorials, too. The Seminar will demand a serious commitment from the students, in terms of research and collaborative work, both individually and in groups.
Evaluation method
The assessment will be made especially on the evaluation of the students active participation in the presencial sessions (30%), in the oral presentations and completion of tasks (40%) and in a final essay (30%), to be presented and debated in the classroom. Non participation in less than 20% of the joint seminars will imply a devaluation of the final mark of 20%.
