Objectives
a) Acquire knowledge that the forms and experiences of the medieval city result of the symbiosis between the deep and
complex cultural heritage received from Antiquity and the innovative aspects resulting from a particular society and from a
medieval Christian mentality;
b) Get an overview of the medieval city according to variants from geochronological variants and attentive to the
relationship between structures and conjunctures;
c) Acquire a thorough and updated knowledge about different aspects of medieval Portuguese;
d) Acquiring contact with medieval sources appropriate to the study of medieval towns to allowing to a diversified approach
to this topic

Introduction: Problematics. The contribution of other social sciences and humanities. The diversity of sources to study the
city. The Portuguese case. Some operational concepts.
