Objectives

a) To use and to exploit different approaches and methodologies in teaching a FL.
b) To develop linguistic and cultural competences from an intercultural perspective.
c) To develop the production and use of materials and the design of tasks aiming at a reflective and critical analysis.
d) To develop further the formative, social and citizenship aims inherent to foreign language education.
e) To develop a critical understanding of foreign language education and intercultural communication.
f) To participate in links with partners abroad, including visits, exchanges or ICT links.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

a) Intercultural communicative approach to TEFL.
b) The components of intercultural competence.
c) Conceptual vocabulary: identity, culture, intercultural dialogue, competence, intercultural citizenship.
d) Principles of planning different components of IC.
e) Resources, approaches and activities to develop intercultural competence.
f) Assessment and evaluation of IC.
g) Critical analysis of textbook suggestions to deal with language-and-culture.
h) Literary texts in TEFL.
i) Critical analysis of examples of teaching practice.
j) Observation tasks and techniques.

Teaching method

The course will combine theoretical and practical sessions, including presentation, demonstration, practical activities, group discussion and reflection on the topics studied. Priority is given to the practical implementation of theory, interaction and active participation of the students, working individually and in groups.

Evaluation method

Students will carry out small individual assignments throughout the semester and will prepare a project on education for intercultural citizenship. Preparation of a poster for participation in a video conference with peers from the University of Valencia. Regular contribution during classes will be subject to assessment.

Courses
