Objectives
a) Museology and Natural History. Scientific progress and popular instruction. The emergence of ethnography. Processes and objetives in ethnographical collections. Ethnography and archaeology. New orientations: the priority to enviromental issues.
b) The interaction between museums and space: a history. Diversification of museological tipologies. Contemporay issues.
c) Regional museums. Representations of territory and interdisciplinary dialogues. Environment and social intervention. Ecomuseology.
d) Heritage processes and values. Institutional contexts. Methodologies: case studies. Terminology and concepts. Musealization vs. heritagization.
e) Overview of the Portuguese situation. Central and regional interventions. Diagnosis and renovation. Economic issues and the role of private initiative. Recent projects.

Teaching method
The seminar combines a) lectures with b) seminars dedicated to the presentation and debate of bibliographical references by the students.
Evaluation method
Grading is based on the evaluation of a) oral presentations of bibliographical references (40%); b) final essay on a specific topic (60%).
