Objectives

This seminar aims to build on student’s knowledge and competences acquired during classes of Audiovisual
Translation English-Portuguese I, it also aims: (1) to develop the practice of audiovisual translation, and
especially of subtitling, voice over and spotting; (2) to develop analytical reading skills and critical reflection
regarding the most recent developments in Translation Studies, translation problems and translational
strategies specific to AVT in general and subtitling in particular.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

(1) Subtitling problems and procedures: exercises and discussion; (2) Subtitling and translation for voice over
exercises; with and without script; with script and template; with an already subtitled programme; with various
parameters; of various genres (comedy, documentary, police television dramas, etc.).

Teaching method

Subtitling exercises correspond to direct contact with the subtitling software (SPOT) and hands-on experience
of various real-life AVT translation tasks. Additionally, students will be required to make oral presentations
during the correction of all exercises, by discussing the identification of problems, the research leading to the
reflection on alternative solutions and the decision process.

Evaluation method

The final mark will correspond to the average of the following items: attendance, punctuality, regular oral
participation and all assignments carried out throughout the semester (60%), final project (40%).
