Objectives

The main aims of this seminar are (a) to develop skills to conceive and carry out research in specific of Security Studies and Strategy, following criteria of ethic and high quality and (b) to
elaborate a doctoral thesis project in Security Studies and Strategy that contributes to advance the knowledge in this area, using the adequate theoretical and methodological tools to attain
levels of excellence.

None.

Subject matter

Due to the prevalent tutorial orientation of the Seminar, the syllabus is flexible, being adjusted to the specific research purposes of the PhD students. Usually, three major issues are
presented and discussed in the sessions attended by all the students enrolled in the Seminar: (i) the ´state of art´ in Security Studies and Strategy – fundamental problems, analytical
traditions and theoretical debates; (ii) guidelines and research perspectives in Security Studies and Strategy; (iii) critical review of the more relevant empirical research.

Teaching method

Along with a few sessions for discussing general Security Studies and Strategy topics, students have an individual tutorial supervision, thus receiving direct feedback on their work in
progress at regular meetings with the Seminar’s responsible.

Evaluation method

Assessment by a written work that establishes the guidelines of the PhD project.
