Objectives
a. Acquisition of theoretical reflection capabilities and empirical bases of the relationship between education, social, economic and cultural development in different spatio-temporal contexts, from a comparative approach, especially at the macro level;
b. Mastery of major interpretive theoretical frameworks of these relations;
c. Ability to operationalize the analytical frameworks arising from problematizing process underlying those theoretical frameworks.
d. Ability to interpret the processes and mechanisms of regulation of mass education systems in transnationalization contexts of educational policies.
e. Communication skills with peers, the academic community and society at large on the issues and problems of the relationship between education, social organization and economic and social dinâsmicas

1. Myths, purposes and concepts of mass education systems in the nineteenth century.
2. Main theoretical frameworks on the development of mass education systems:
2.1 The functionalist theories
2.2 The historical-structuralist theories
2.3 Theories of modernization and human capital
2.4 Credencialist theories
2.5 The neo-institutionalist theories
3. For a comparative analysis of the development of mass education systems.
4. The development of the Portuguese education system in historical and comparative perspective.
5. Systems and mechanisms for regulation of national education systems.
6. Development perspectives: homogenization or differentiation?
