Education objectives
MSc in Mathematics and Applications aims to provide a solid scientific background, allowing the creation of excellent professionals, capable of
on issues related to the following areas of specialization in Applied Mathematics: Actuarial, Statistics and Operational Research; Algebra, Logic and Computation, Numerical Analysis and Differential Equations.
Actuarial, Statistics and Operational Research. This area is a very old reference in the Department of Mathematics, FCT / UNL and has been, over the years, much sought, not only for its scientific interest, but also by the request of the labor market.
Algebra, Logic and Computation. This area, in addition to its current scientific relevance, is strongly linked to the development of Informatics and Computing.
Numerical Analysis and Differential Equations. This area is closely linked to the Physics and Engineering, presents, in addition to scientific research, career opportunities in laboratories where it is necessary to model and numerically solve various problems such as water pollution control, optimization of structures or mathematical treatment of sound or image.

The following modes of assessment for the curriculum component may be used:
1. Assessment only with a finaltest or paper.
2. Distributed evaluation without final exam or paper. In subjects with this method of assessment, there will be throughout the academic year, for example, laboratory work, mini-tests, tests, individual or group seminars, to be awarded classification with which to construct the final classification.
3. Distributed evaluation with compulsory examination or final paper. In subjects with this method of assessment, there will be an evaluation component similar to the preceding point and an evaluation component with the final exam.
4. Distributed evaluation with the possibility of exemption from examination or final paper.
The Dissertation comprises a public discussion before a Jury, in accordance with law.
