Education objectives
Bioorganic Chemistry is an emerging scientific discipline lying at the interface of biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, and traditional organic chemistry. Master in Biorganic Chemistry appears as a response to the needs of human resources formation in Portuguese and European societies, following the recent development of fine chemistry, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries. The main objective of this course is to fit qualified professionals with specific skills in the areas of analysis, characterization and intelligent development of new drugs and biomaterials, rationalization of drug interaction with biological systems, as well as the design of new materials, and synthetic methodologies with improving efficacy and sustainability.
Master students should receive an interdisciplinary formation, encompassing the following thematic areas:
- Organic synthesis of bioactive compounds
- Medicinal chemistry
- Computational chemistry
- Forensic chemistry
- Supramolecular and nanochemistry
- Radicalar chemistry
- Chemical catalysis
- Structural analysis and analytical techniques

Evaluation rules
The following modes of evaluation are used with regard to academic qualifications:
- Evaluation based solely on an examination or completion of a final project.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester excluding examination or final project. In these courses students can expect to carry out, for example, laboratory activities, mini-tests, tests, individual or group projects, seminar-related activities, any combination of which will be used to determine the final grade.
- Evaluation based obligatorily on an examination or a final project. In these courses there extists a form of evaluation similar to one of the aformentioned activities in paragraph 2 as well as a form of evaluation based on a final exam.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester with the possibility of foregoing an examination or a final project.
The Dissertation seminar includes a public presentation, before a Jury, in accordance with legal statutes.
