Objectives

This course gives an overview of fundamental concepts of Structural Mechanics, namely the evaluation of internal forces, stresses, strains and displacements in linear elastic solids and structures. The topics treated herein are later resumed in the course of Strength of Materials II.

Prerequisites

Knowledege of Statics and Mechanics of Continuous Media

Subject matter

1 - Complements of Statics and Mechanics of Continuous Media

Internal forces in tridimensional space.

Relationships between internal forces and stresses.

Cables under concentrated and distributed loading: parabolic and catenary equilibrium.

Stress - strain relationships. Linear elastic behaviour. Plastic behaviour.

Stresses and strains in axi-symmetric thin shells.

2 - Axial Loading

Elastic stresses, strains and displacements.

Thermal effects.

Elastic strain energy due to axial loading.

Principle of Virtual Displacements.

Statically indeterminate structures: compatibility conditions; force method.

Impact loads.

Incremental elastoplastic analysis.

Limit analysis.

Permanent strains and residual stresses.

3 - Elastic Bending

Bending stresses and strains.

Asymmetric bending.

Bending with axial force.

Strain energy due to bending.

Determination of deflections: the elastica.

Deflections using the Principle of Virtual Work.

Statically indeterminate structures: force method.

Thermal effects.

Heterogeneous sections.

Bending of no-tension materials

Bending of curved beams.
