Objectives

Knowledge of the methods, principles and formulations taught in the scope of the discipline, to allow a theoretical and practical approach of problems and questions of the forum of urban hydraulics, covering water supply and wastewater systems.

Subject matter

Urban water cycle. Water supply systems, urban and industrial sewage systems and pluvial drainage systems. Design criteria: project horizon, phased project and construction; population evolution calculation, analytical methods of demographic components; estimation and calculation of capitations and specific consumption; peak factor and reduction factor. Legislation and regulation. Surface and groundwater sources. Water transport systems (gravitational and non-gravitational), general design, design of water mains, technical and economical dimensioning of conduits; conception and dimensioning of pumping systems. Water supply system equipments: intake structures in surface and groundwater sources (types, conception and dimensioning). Sewage water and pluvial water drainage systems; types of systems, conception and dimensioning of conduits and elevatory systems. Urban flooding.

Teaching method

The teaching method includes, weekly, a 3 hours Theoretical-Practical (TP) class, where the students develop engineering skills in the urban water cycle (water supply and sanitation) and in the stormwater urban drainage.

Students receive the information by audiovisual means, specially computer slides and oral explanation of concepts/models. There is a forum (at Moodle platform) to discuss and ask general or specific questions. Email and private telephone of the lecturer is available during all the term period. Continuous evaluation consists in three tests, which divide the learning material along the term (Quantitative inputs and extraction of water, water transport and distribution, foul sewers conveyance, stormwater drainage).

Evaluation method

a) Frequency: All students have "satisfactory" in frequency classification for allowance to examinations, as it is not compulsory the presence at the classes;

 b) Approval from continuous evaluation: It will be approved from the continuous evaluation system who will obtain 9.5 in a scale 0-20, as an average from 3 tests to submit during the semester

 c) Examinations: Examinations will be performed to those who will not obtain approval by continuous evaluation or, when obtaining it, will are interested in getting it better.
