Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide the students with knowledge in the fields of renewable energies and sustainable processes for wastes valorisation and treatment by biological processes.
Subject matter
-Use of renewable energies versus conventional energies.
1.1-Sun energy, Aeolic energy and Geothermic energy; Biomass as energy source.
2- Biological processes for production of energetic chemicals from wastes.
2.1- Production of ethanol, bioplastics, methane and hydrogen.
3- Biological reactors.
3.1-Type of reactors used for production of chemical from wastes.
4- Processes for bioproducts recovery.
4.1-Membrane processes, adsorption, solvent extraction.
5- Biological treatment of pollutants.
5.1- Aerobic/ anaerobic digestion; Nutrient removal; Bioremediation; Biocorrosion.

Teaching method
This course is composed by a theoretical part, composed by one-hour units, and a practical part. In the practical part, computer software is used for bioprocess simulation, design and cost analysis. A project is developed in this course and discussed at the end of the semester.

Avaliação contínua:
1) Trabalho de grupo com entrega de relatório: TG
2) Elaboração dum Seminário: ES
3) Teste 2 - 40%
Nota final = 40% TG + 40% Teste + 20% ES
Nota final mínima para aproveitamento à unidade curricular é 9,5
Nota mínima de cada elemento de avaliação é 9,5 para aproveitamento à unidadre curricular
Avaliação por exame:
