Objectives
This course aims to:
a) Provide the students with the knowledge for the management of heritage resources;
b) To present the fundamental concepts, its historical evolution and main theoretical and practical contributions related to cultural heritage and museology;
c) To present different approaches and solutions related to the appreciation , enjoyment and promotion of heritage testimonies;
d) To develop skills and critical thinking of students in relation to the complexity and multiplicity of economic reality and national and international museum .
Subject matter
Culture, heritage and museums. Definition of culture. Economy and Culture. Guardianship and policies for heritage: the Portuguese case.
Heritage: origin and historical evolution of the concept. The social heritage building. Contemporary landscape. Libraries and Archives. Intangible heritage. Safeguard policies, protection and classification. Economic value and appreciation of heritage.
Museum concept and historical background. The new museology, the critical museology. Museums as institutions: management and financing models. Museum planning and internal organization.
Storage: conditions, problems and solutions. Visitable Storages. Movement of collections.
Exhibitions: function, style and duration.
The educational function of the museum. The educational services. Cultural activities. Public and museums: contemporary challenges .

Teaching method
The lectures are supported with powerpoint presentation. In practical classes texts on theoretical material are analyzed and discussed and examples of good practices are presented by invited lectures.
Continuous evaluation with three elements of evaluation.
i) oral presentation on the theme "Heritage and Museum " ; ii ) A critical review of an article iii ) Project: written work + oral presentation
