Objectives
The principal aim of this course is to create an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of Work of Art and Artifacts of cultural or historic relevance. The understanding is build up through seminars (4h), workshops (52h) and theoretical lessons (28h). It is a stimulanting and demanding course, due to its interdisciplinary paradigm and, usually, students show an excellent performance, namely in the Workshops. The average expecting working time for the student, without contact with the teacher, is 30-40h of study and 52-60h for the preparation of WS and reports.

Theoretical classes program:
Art and modus operandi: instrumentality and dynamics of the method regarding artistic creation; artistic and craft production. The knowledge transmission, the technologic revolutions and its consequences on artistic production. Centrality of technologic investigation in study and conservation of cultural heritage.

Individual practice works
1st class: The transformation of material in Art: prime materials from Antiquity to Middle Age;
2nd class: The transformation of material in Art: treatises and recipe books from Antiquity to Middle Age;
3rd class: students presentations: pigments and colorants;
4th class Workshop 1: the Stockholm Papyrus, the manuscript of Theophilus monk (De diversis artibus); the Lucca manuscript and the Mappae Clavicula; the Strasburg manuscript and the De Arte Illuminandi; Il Libro dell’Arte from Cennino Cennini;
5th and 6th classes: Pigments and colorants preparation I;
7th and 8th classes: Animal and vegetable glues and oils preparation; use of this binders with some pigments already prepared over panel, stone and parchment;
9th and 10th classes: The illumination (I): drawing and painting over the parchment with the pictorial materials prepared by the student.
