Objectives
The student will be able to perform the design tunnels and other underground works and also slope stabilization works.
Subject matter
Reinforced earth. Slope stabilization: stabilization solutions, the importance of drainage; application of calculation methods to the evaluation of the effects of the stabilization solutions. Tunnels and other underground works: basic principles of underground structures; the importance of the stability of the front face; construction techniques; design methods; definition of supports (primary and definitive). Prediction and modelling of the behavior of retaining structures and of underground works. Importance of the construction stages. Instrumentation and monitoring. Case studies.
