Objectives

Students are expected to grow an understanding of some of the key elements of the innovation process.

The analysis of the Innovation Scoring methodology and of some basic tools for the preparation of innovation evaluation report will help students to learn how to analyse and diagnose the innovative skills of an organization.

Subject matter

1. Innovation - the concept; different perspectives and types. The difference between innovation, invention and difusion. Innovation as a process. Models of invention and of innovation. Radical and Incremental Innovation, Measuring innovation - indicators.

2. The meaning of “Innovation” in different study areas. Some basic concepts: Technological change, Technological Advancement, Product Innovation, Process Innovation, Organizational Innovation, End-user Innovation. Product Proliferation. (market segmentation). Innovative Pricing. Network Effects.

3. Innovation and Economic Policy – The Theory of Institutions. Institutions and Risk reduction and coordinatop. Standards. Intellectual Property rights. Incentive creation for private R&D and investing in Public R&D. Government R&D activities and potential crowding-out of private R&D. Market failure and intervention.

4. Project Analysis. Public Projects’ Analysis. Cost-Benefit Analysis. Cost-Effectiveness Analysis. The contingent valuation method (and stated preferences) and the revealed preferences method.

5. Measuring Innovation – Valuation problems. Measuring Innovative Capabilities’ Resources
