Objectives
This curricular unit has as its main purpose to provide students competences to recognize the major sources of international law and their content. Its goal is to give students a solid knowledge of international law that will enable them to create of a framework of reference to understand international law and its future evolution.
In the end of the semester, students will be able to recognize:
(i) the main sources and subjects of international law;
(ii) the international spaces subjected to international law;
(iii) the principles of international state and individual responsibility;
(iv) international law conflicts resolution mechanisms.

3. International conventions procedure in Portugal.

1. Doctrinal conceptions and incorporation models.

V - International spaces
1. Legal framework of international spaces.
VI - International responsibility
1. States civil responsibility.
2. Individual criminal responsibility.
VII - International conflicts resolution mechanisms
1. The principle of peaceful resolution of conflicts.
2. Non judicial peaceful conflicts resolution mechanisms.
3. Judicial conflict resolution mechanisms.
VIII - The Use of Force
1. The international prohibition on the use of force.
2. The United Nations Charter legal framework on the use of force.

Teaching method
Two teaching methodologies are followed:
1 – Doctrinal lessons where the teacher present the syllabus. In these lessons the students are invited to participate by asking questions and making comments.
2- Individual presentations by students. In these sessions, the teacher will guide students in the oral presentations, in the simulations of hearings of the International Court of Justice and in the resolution of case-studies.
Evaluation method
The evalutaion method was designed to measure the extente to which students competences were developed. Students that reguarly attend classes are evaluated by oral and written presentations (maximum of 10% of the evaluation). Final written exam for all studentes.
