Objectives

Give future jurists a general idea of how to analyse and understand international relations; render them capable of understanding the characteristics of the current international system, in the light of contemporary international relations theories: namely, post-bipolar ethnic, nationalist and religious conflicts.

Subject matter

The emergence of International relations as an academic dsicipline. States and sovereignty.From the international system of States to international society. Realism, liberalism and struturalism face to face with the end of the bipolar world. The program of the discipline is devoted to the detailed study of a series of themes: nacionalism, ethnicity and identity. The three main paradigms: primordialis, instrumentalism and constructivism. The State and ethno-religious conflicts. The extant models for conflict regulation, their reach and limits, International Law and conflict mediation, collective security and international organizations. Peace keeping, peace enforcement and nation building: the specificity of contemporary scenarios. The international order afte September 11. Kosovo Georgia and al-Qaeda. Identity in the modern world and the new emergent forms of political community.

Teaching method

Lectures will be participative, after a first ex catedra section. Following presentations of the themes, a discussion on them will characteristically follow.
