Objectives

 The main objective of this course is to improve the students’ understanding of the most important concepts of Health Law and Bioethics in Portugal and in Europe. In order to achieve it legal texts, essays and court decisions are studied, and exercises are solved by the lecturer with the students.

Subject matter

The following themes are lectured in this course: Bioethics and Biolaw; Health Law; Medically assisted reproduction; The human embryo status; Pre-implantation diagnosis; Pre-natal diagnosis; Abortion; Surrogate motherhood; Human reproductive cloning; Stem cell research; Predictive testing and employment law; Predictive testing and insurance law; Patient’s rights; Informed consent and patient autonomy; Confidentiality and protection of medical data; dna databanks; Medical responsibility; Research on human subjects; Ethics committees; Organ donation and allotransplantation; Xenotransplantation; Advanced directives; Palliative care; Euthanasia; Future generations’ rights; The human genome as a heritage of humanity; Biotechnological patents; Nanotechnology; Tobacco consumption.
