Objectives
This module focuses on macroeconomics: the study of the behavior of the economy as a whole. The aim of the module is to provide a rigorous analysis of the main topics in macroeconomics. Our approach is based on microeconomic foundations, as studied in the microeconomics course(s) you took before: we move from individual optimization problems to the macroeconomic problems faced in the aggregate economy. Topics to be covered include: intertemporal consumption and labor supply; business-cycle analysis; capital utilization and unemployment; monetary policy; fiscal policy.

Subject matter
This outline is a guide to the general nature and order of the topics covered in the course. Some variation may occur. Additional readings will be suggested in the lecture and posted in the course webpage. Section 1. Introduction to Macroeconomics. Readings: Barro, Chapters 1 and 2. Section 2. Economic Growth. Readings: Barro, Ch. 3, 4 and 5. Section 3. Economic Fluctuations. Readings: Barro, Ch. 6, 7, 8 and 9. Section 4. Money, Inflation, Interest Rates and Business Cycles. Readings: Barro, Chapters 10, 11, 15 and 16. Section 5. The Government Sector. Readings: Barro, Chapters 12, 13 and 14. Section 6. The Open Economy. [Time permitting.] Readings: Barro, Chapters 17 and 18.

Evaluation method
Participation in tutorials will be part of the final assessment. For each tutorial, students will be required to discuss problem sets given in advance. Students? answers to the problem sets are due on Monday by 11am in a box left with security at the building?s entrance. There will be a midterm and a final examination. The final overall grade for the course will be calculated in the following way: 30% Midterm Exam + 60% Final Exam + 10% Tutorial Participation
