Objectives
By the end of the unit, students should be able to:
– a) Discuss the current state of quality of health care;
– b) Describe the factors that might explain the current state;
– c) Discuss key concepts like Total Quality Management and Continuous Quality Improvement
– d) be familiar with Donabedian’s triad;
– e) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of measures of structure, process and results;
– f) know the steps involved in developing performance measures;
– g) Be familiar with the principles underlying accreditation processes;
– h) Discuss how information Technologies can be used in quality assurance and improvement;
– i) Discuss the relations between payment schemes and quality, namely the concept of P4P;
– j) Be familiar with the concepts of error, adverse event and clinical risk;
– k) know the key areas to monitor in order to ensure patient safety;
– l) understand the role of patient satisfaction assessment;
– m) analyse critically satisfaction surveys;
– n) Discuss the challenges and success factors in change processes.
