Objectives
This course focuses advanced statistical methods, introducing advanced concepts and methodologies in statistics(sampling, Multivariate Statistics, spatio-temporal Statistics, etc.), with special emphasis on their applications in Public Health. More specifically doctoral students should be able to:
- Formulate and solve problems in health research using advanced statistical and / or multivariate methods;
- Develop critical processes related to the framework, the potentialities and limitations of the various statistical methods in Public Health;
- Develop the capacity for effective use of statistical methods in research, aiming at producing robust and valid results.
Subject matter
1. Sampling
2. Multiple Linear Regression
3. Logistic Regression
4. Principal Components Analysis
5. Clustering Process (Spatio-temporal statistics)
Teaching method
This course primarily includes theoretical and practical aspects, directed to the research problems of each student.
Hence it is essential that some lectures are conducted at a computer lab (using various software Statistics) and with a maximum of 15 students.
Classes consist of a basic theoretical presentation and subsequent applications using a variety of software’s. Particular attention will be given to the concepts, problems framework, resolution, interpretation and critical discussion in the context of research in Public Health.
Evaluation method
- Presentation of a report written as a research paper, presentation and discussion. (80%)
- Participation in the sessions (20%)
